Exploring the Selves
An Online Workshop on Sub-personalities
An Online Workshop on Sub-personalities
March 5th, 6th, 7th 2021
We all have different facets to our personalities. In this workshop, actors will explore their overall personality by separating the “selves” or “energies” that display totally different behaviors, thoughts, and perceptions of the world. Different than moods or feelings, these sub-parts have far more complex and deeper characteristics that we as actors can inhabit for the characters we are to create.
Actors in this workshop have a deeply enriching and profound experience. Through raising awareness about the self, the actors access sub-personas such as The Vulnerable-child, the Magical-child, the Playful-child, the Good-Son/Daughter, the Pleaser, the Inner-Critic, the Perfectionist, the Critical-parent or Loving-parent, the list goes on. By accessing these “energies,” the actor becomes aware of how each sub-part contributes to life experience, the decisions that we make, our emotional life, essentially how these selves protect us and our vulnerability. It is out of protecting our vulnerability that personality develops, in that we cleverly learn very early on how to have our basic needs met and fulfilled. We learn how to express ourselves, ask for what we need, cry, moan, kick, scream, smile, be polite, etc…
All of these selves play a critical and necessary role in our development and in our life. No one “self” is neither good nor bad, but rather serves a function and purpose. However, when we begin to over-identify with any one of these selves and neglect others we can become out of balance in a sense. In other words, “so-and-so” may often play the “victim” in life as a way to cope with or justify their circumstances. Perhaps their “Pusher-self” is neglected, and by reawakening that part, this individual begins to change their life conditions. Also, investigating when certain selves became “primary-self” and why others became less primary, or even disowned is of incredible value and insight for the person exploring their personality on this level.
This is a substantially complex subject and the workshop gives the actor a more cohesive understanding and experience of this work, and each actor has required reading materials prior to the workshop based on the process of Voice-Dialogue.
